TakeThePointsDog vs Toad
#1
My sweet German Shorthair Pointer Maggie found a large poisonous toad last night and decided to taste the nasty thing.  I heard her crying in the back yard and went out to see her with her muzzle forced between bars in  our gate.  I couldn't figure out if she was stuck or what, and it took a lot of force to pull her out.  Her legs were splayed out and shaking, so I thought she might have broken a leg.  She just cried, with her head down and walked a few steps with her legs splayed out.

It was then that I noticed Tucker standing over the toad, about as big around as a softball.  I threw it over the fence and took Maggie to the hose and rinsed out her mouth.  I was getting ready to take her to the emergency vet, but noticed she seemed a little better.  I kept and eye on her and about 15 minutes later she was pretty much back to normal.  After thinking she might be dieing, she went right back out and found another of the damn things.  This time she didn't mouth it, but pointed it out to me.  Stupid dog.

These type of toads can be fatal to dogs.  I found 2 others that night and disposed of them.

I shouldn't have dogs.  I love them too much and when they get sick it tears me up.

About 10 years ago my parents dog ate something, and suffered some kind of neuro-toxin poisoning. The emergency vets were able to save her, but no idea what caused it, animal, mushroom, whatever.

I think toads have a neuro toxin.  Some chewing gun is lethal to dogs.  A friend's friend had a dog died from eating Juicy Friut or some such thimg.

It's xylitol, the artificial sweetener in sugar free gum.  Dave Portnoy's rescue dog almost died from eating sugar free gum.   He was furious about it, but he took a lot of heat for allowing Miss Peaches to eat the gum in the first place.

There’s quite a list of things dogs should not eat. Thanks to IowaMels for telling me why gum was on the list. Now toads were not on any list that I know of. The reason I point this out that one of our dogs got very sick a few months ago and I googled the list. The MIL will give the dogs about anything to eat which worries me. She gives them chicken bones and also a few months ago, just as I warned her and the FIL, the other dog got choked. Fortunately the emergency vet visit saved the day. But she still gives them chicken bones. People get old and will not change, despite the evidence and consequences. It’s crazy.
