Most protection breeds are also dogs of prey. They see something running their 1st instinct is to chase it down, People, Other Dogs, Animals, Bikes , Hell even cars.
If or once they catch it they will normally bite or attack. Sometimes not intending to actually kill , but to subdue.
My GSD has got a Cat and a Chipmunk , She just put her big Paw down on top of both of them until i yelled Off .
She was looking at me like i caught the damn thing what do i do now.
Other Dogs not disciplined to release will and can inflict a lot of damage including Death.
3 big dogs at once together just feed off the fury of each other.
Horrible way to Die.

My daughter's dog is a predator. If it runs, she chases it. It's a game to her. I've seen her jump out of 3' tall grass and grab a quail out of the air. She's extremely fast. Not greyhound fast but fast nonetheless. She's a Siberian husk and German Shepard mix. Still a pup, will be a year old next month. Hopefully she'll mellow out soon.

Reminds me of the time we were cutting through a yard as kids, and a German Shepherd attacked me and my brother. Since I was faster than my brother, the Shepherd got him first and bit him on the ass. Fortunately he had a wallet in his back pocket and the German Shepherd left teeth marks on his wallet and not on his butt.

I have two German Shepherds and the wife has a Silky Terrier, which is basically a Yorkie with a silky coat.

So the dog let him go?

Did the teen 'deserve' to die? No, of course not.
Did the teen get himself into a situation where he didn't know the outcome? Definitely.
Bad choices lead to bad consequences. I feel much more compassion for people, and I know several, who were innocently minding their own business and were viciously attacked.

There is a reason there is a 105:100 boys to girl birth ratio. Boys/Men take risks.

 Nice looking dog!
For those who think the dog owner should be criminally charged, what would you have the govt mandate dog owners do to protect citizens from their poor choices?
Example: Florida has legislation that pools need to be enclosed, meaning a barrier must be erected that satisfies the code and regs. If the same teen gets inside that barrier and drowns, should the homeowner be criminally charged?
Bottom line... I'm not responsible for another man's behavior and choices. It's my yard. It's my fence. Stay off my fence and out of my yard.
