The vast majority of Americans are "fat, dumb, and happy", and in debt.

Even the lower middle class folks have 60" HD TVs and cable etc.  They can buy beer and chips and food and have a vacation to wherever.

Some 70% of draft age males do not qualify for the military, mostly due to weight, but also drugs.

We couldn't revolt if we had reason.  The TV is on.

Sadly this is very true.

True, but people used to be steered toward independence and self reliance.  Now people are being encouraged to let the system/someone else take care of the hard things for them.  At least it seems that way to me.  A microcosm of this revolves around guns and tragedies.  An active shooter?  Where are the authorities?  The "weird" guy down the street, that likes to have the neighborhood kids around, knew the score.  You look at a kid the wrong way there would be a boot party at your house, and I'm not talking in the fashion of Tupperware.  etc...

There was a time, not all that long ago, where people would resolve issues like that on their own.  I'm not saying in all cases.  I'm just saying in general.

Before 1900, an American likely would live his entire life with no contact with Federal government beyond the Post Office.  If there was a war, that changed of course, but often there was not one.  The Feds were distant and tiny, insignificant to anyone's life.

Today, if there is a problem, "we" expect government to DO SOMETHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not "us", but government.  We are as addicted as anyone ever was on heroin.  Addicted, and it won't change barring a total collapse.

Obviously, folks who live in an urban environment depend on government far more than rural folks, that is inherent, and a much higher percentage now live in urban or suburban locations, very few in the country.

People - mainly the broads - do what is known as 'playing the results'. Ever hear a person say "I knew something was wrong with that guy" after he kills somebody? That's what it means.

We used to have 'neighborhoods' and 'neighbors'. On my street if Mr.SoSo told me to go home, I went home. No questions asked. These days he'd get sued for something. It all goes to the household. We have a large % of fatherless homes. Boys are not going to learn how to be men from mom. Nor are these kids going to fear her if/when he joins the wrong crowd. Nobody ever said: "Wait until your mother gets home".

The left and media glorified 'single mothers' for so long even the right has jumped on board. Make one negative comment about these women and watch what happens. It happens on this forum whenever I make some comment about Western broads.

The days of some perv having to fear for his life if he ever tried something to the neighbors kid are over. Another thing that has popped up is the "let the police handle it" mentality. Ruin a person's life over some neighbor dispute.

Plenty of more examples but I think most get it.

Note: Cincy posted before I saw your "Serious question:  Do you think the blessing of obscene (obscene by historical standards/context) wealth and prosperity has simply made us soft as a nation?  Or at least has played a significant role?" He pretty much summed it up.
The America, and the American Military, that you once knew is gone.

It's going to collapse as it will not go on forever.  The only way things really change is when a certain group dies, and this will happen as well.
What should the government provide?  Well, it's gone WAY too far in control and offerings.   Defense, laws on marriage, taxation, roads and license, and now due to our advancement in technology and such the environment.   Mail?  good idea as it's supposedly honest and benefits all.  We need foreign relations, courts, and so forth, but MANY areas of governance could be handled at the state level to reduce duplicity and cost and corruption.

Some people just vote stupid or on a single issue or just party. This past November we had a gubernatorial election here in Georgia. Stacy Abrams was the Democratic candidate. Two of my liberal minded friends said she was too radical left and didnâ€t like her. So I asked them if they were writing ina candidate, not voting or what. Their answer, oh no, weâ€re voting for Abrams because sheâ€s a Democrat.

Another part of the equation revolves around the lost trust of previously trusted institutions.  Still though, fatherless homes is a great point.  Probably the largest player in all of it.  Everyone needs an occasional boot in the ass.  Dad's feet are typically bigger than mom's.  Kids need both parents.  Something that didn't take a rocket scientist to realize merely 40--50 years ago now is seemingly some major revelation.

I will say this though, they are likely doing the LOTE thing.  I would probably do the same if the roles were reversed.  Mitch McConnel or some squad type.  Who ya gonna pick?

Schools, Government, Churches, Sports, etc. all destroyed.
