It makes sense now knowing that a lot of these former NFL players have horrible lives after retiring.
When people say stuff "that was when football was football" and and whatnot... UGH.
Easy to say that when it's not you or their family. It's terribly sad what these folks endure.

Average life span is in the mid-late 50's.

Modern day gladiators lets just be honest.   They may have helmets and so forth but they are beaten down badly over course of time.

The season is too long as well.  Add the years they play from Pee Wee through their 30s and it's a lot of beatings.

Yup, and I'm hearing the hammer-heads in the league offices want to reduce the preseason by 2 and then expand the reg season to 18 games.  If anything the season should be cut back a couple of games.  More real games mean more *real* hits.

The players demanded more and more money so in exchange they got a longer season and more demands.  Luck is a smart guy and probably knows he will never be the player he was before all the injuries so why keep punishing yourself?  Just take your money and enjoy life.  Unfortunately a lot of NFL and NBA players blow it as they make it and will have nothing to show for it but a beaten down body.
