When I was a kid I had a BB gun. I'd shoot sparrows, blue jays and starlings. When I got my dad's old 22 single shot I'ld also shoot squirrels and rabbits. Barn cats would get the birds and dad ate the squirrels and rabbits. Now I enjoy watching and feeding all of these in my back yard. Red birds, robins, humming birds and mourning doves were always off limits.
Oh, you also didn't shoot barn swallows.

I shot one bird with my bb gun when I was about 9. The bb hit the little thing in the beak and knocked it out. I felt absolutely awful and never shot at one again.
I did shoot several bullfrogs with the bb gun, which were very tasteful.Â
We had numerous bb gun fights when I was 11-12 or so. Those guns had lost so much power by then , you could see the bb flying at your target.

We had bb gun wars in the back woods of my uncle's yard. Only rules were mandatory eye protection and no critter control pellets. Crosman 766 was my choice. I still have a bb in my left arm just outside of the elbow. Â
All good things seem to come to an end. In our case, some kid's mother went to the police one too many times. We were told to stop "for real" this time.
The woods morphed into bike trails but it never was the same.

Winkin' will tell blinkin', blinkin' will tell nod and nod will tell Barney. That's the line of communication.

Yup. Nice episode to teach a lesson.
Barney whistling then shouts "here comes the cat".

Barney whistling then shouts "here comes the cat". Slingshots were fun back then.

Mom was born in '22 and dad in '23. Mom always said she was lucky. They had milk cows, beef cattle, hogs, chickens and a large garden. Dad wasn't that fortunte. She told be that most times they had bread and maybe butter for meals or if they were lucky had bread and gravey. Dad busted his ass to make a better life for his family and he succeeded. Sometime I'll tell you about their adventure when dad got his draft notice during WWII.

You are younger than me so back in the day for me there was no such thing as eye protection but by God's grace nobody got hit in the eye or face. Eventually we would run out of BB's and resort to throwing rocks or close to the 4th of July we would load up apples with firecrackers and sometimes an M80 which was like a nuclear attack.

Crazy brother did get me in the face one time. I was innocently standing inside the house and screen door. I noticed him emerge from behind the little house in the back and fire. It hit me on the orbital bone next to the temple. 1/4 inch away from the old eye ball.
